Attorney John Sherman has been with Mendel Colbert & Associates, Inc. since 2013, and became a partner in 2016. A native Iowan, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 2007 from the University of Iowa, and a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2011. During law school, John interned for the state public defender in Vista, California. He also volunteered for HELP Legal Assistance of Davenport, Iowa, a nonprofit organization. John is a Boyd Service Honors recipient, in recognition of his commitment to volunteer work during law school. In addition, he served as Senior Managing Editor on volume 14 of The Journal of Gender, Race & Justice, in which he was also published.
Following law school, John worked as an attorney for a law firm in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa, where he represented clients in family and criminal law matters in both Iowa and Illinois. He worked on several appeals, including a reversal and remand of a case that denied post-conviction relief to a juvenile sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. John is deeply committed to advocating for clients who need a voice in the legal process.
John was admitted to the Alaska Bar in May of 2013. As an attorney with Mendel Colbert & Associates, Inc., he has been an invaluable part of the team. He represents clients in family law matters including divorce, custody, and child support issues, as well as in appeals to the Alaska Supreme Court. In 2015 he completed the National Institute of Trial Advocacy’s week-long Family Law Trial Advocacy Institute, which is an intensive course aimed at mastering trial skills and techniques in family law cases. He currently serves as a co-chair of the Alaska Bar Association’s Family Law Section, and has presented on recent Alaska Supreme Court decisions to that section for the past four years.
John and his wife, Nikelle, welcomed their daughter Sybil into the world in the spring of 2019. When not at the office or occupied by Sybil, he takes advantage of Alaska's natural beauty to satisfy his love of hiking, fishing, birding, and all things outdoors.
